Ancient Greeks considered the serpent a sacred symbol of the Greek god Asclepius, a deity associated with healing and medicine. The Rod of Asclepius (the stick of Asclepius) is symbolized by a snake-entwined rod, where in modern times it has become the symbol of medicine.
